Film Noir, Explained One Case File at a Time

This guide breaks film noir down into twelve short chapters: what the term actually means, where its shadows and its slang came from, how it was built shot by shot, and what became of it once the classic period ended. Each chapter answers one question, stays under ten minutes and closes with a short summary you can skim on a second visit. [01] How This Guide Is Organized

The twelve chapters are grouped into three parts. Origins & Foundations covers what the term means and where the style came from, in painting, in pulp fiction and in the newsreels of the 1940s. Style & Craft looks at how noir was actually built: the lighting, the recurring characters, the narration and the city itself. Legacy & Modern Noir follows the style past its classic period, into neo-noir and into the wider culture it still shapes.

Every chapter stands on its own, so you do not need to read in order. But the parts do build on each other: the vocabulary set out in part one is used without re-explanation in parts two and three.
